Skills Development
I created a detailed film poster for the movie American Heist using image sources from google and clips from the movie itself. I started off with a blank background with precise measurements, the width was set at 1200 whilst the height at 1880 which complimented the resolution at 200. I then found and used a standard image of the Manhattan skyscrapers as my main background image, I aligned the image properly using rulers I set up along the x and y axis. Furthermore, I implemented a layer mask and inverted it followed by a vibrance adjustment layer, this was done to strategically drain the colours out of the standard image and reveal a dull, grey image. With this new image, I could now add a brightness/contrast adjustment layer to make the image extremely dark, but still allow its features to be defined I then added a new layer and used the gradient tool to create a black base for the dark skyscrapers to blend into naturally.
To
compliment this image further, I used an image of storm clouds and aligned it
behind the skyscrapers to resonate the thriller effect I was trying to exert
for this film. Also, using a brush to blend the clouds and brightness/contract
adjustment layer to darken them I added a more realistic and thriller
atmosphere to the poster overall.
My
main character image was cropped and cut out from another poster where the
actor was positioned against another actor, this proved difficult as outlining
the character to crop out had to perfect to avoid any foreign images appearing
on screen. To further enhance the character I used a camera raw filter to
adjust and manipulate the colours and contrast embedded within the original
image. I then used blending mode which I set to overlay on a curve graph to
further manipulate the effect lighting and shadows had on the image itself.
In
addition, I noticed the film used a 1970 Plymouth duster as its poster car. As
I could not find a picture of the car that would suffice for my poster, I
improvised and used the backend of a 1969 dodge charger RT doing a burnout.
This worked perfectly as I used a rubber to erase most of the car and smoke in
order to blend it into the black background properly.
I
used an orange, diamond shaped, gradient fill behind the main character in
order to have a clash of colours and I felt as if the orange complimented the
image and the surrounding colours.
Finally,
I used an effect stock image I found on google in order to add more of an
effect on the image. To achieve this I simply set the blending mode to lighten
and added a brightness/contrast adjustment layer to blend the effect into the
image to reveal subtle white spots/scratches on the image.

Whilst making this poster i thought i would try to play around with certain features within photo-shop in order to develop my technical abilities. as shown above, i experimented with the hue and contrast features as well as different types of filters. In addition to this i experimented with banners whereby i would put three separate images together and join them with a banner, this allowed the image to look a lot more professional and elegant.
1950's Background
The 1950's poster was one of the first projects we did in order to test our skills using the magic wand and a variety of newly introduced tools. this taught us the fundamentals of photo-shop such as layering and image manipulation such as flipping and inverting. the magic wand was a very helpful tool to learn as it would be almost essential in future projects.
Magazine Covers
Total film does not typically follow the minimalist nature that Sight and sound follows, it prefers to be more heavily edited in the sense that it would have grand backgrounds which compliment the main character who is usually center framed in a medium shot. as shown above i have adopted these traits and adapted them to my own poster, i changed the color of Christoph Waltz to black and white in order to match the background.

Magazine Covers
I chose this image of Skarsgard as i believe it properly represents the typical, conventional Sight And Sound magazine as it emits nothing but simplicity and Sight and Sound is well known for its more professional, minimalist nature. I have followed the conventions of a typical Sight and Sound magazine, evident in the style of the cover lines and their placements as well as the font used for both main title and cover lines. to add to the realism of this being a genuine sight and sound magazine cover i added the date the magazine was issued in the top right corner as well as a bar code on the side with a price on it.
Empire magazine is the most image heavy and colorful of the three magazines, it prefers to be cluttered with images and wild colors in order to catch the audience's attention. i have mirrored theses characteristics in my own Empire magazine cover; my background image matched perfectly with the image of captain america as they complimented each other and kept the same color scheme of red, blue and white. i have also implemented PUGS as Empire is known for its use of PUGS.
